Employers Must Have a Written Plan for the Prevention of Workplace Violence by July 1, 2024
On March 11, 2024, RPNA circulated an E-Blast on Senate Bill 553, setting a groundbreaking precedent that requires nearly every California business to craft a meticulous plan against workplace violence.
The Plan must be in place on or before July 1, 2024.
• Develop a Written Plan: Craft a transparent and accessible document that details your strategies for curbing workplace violence. This involves identifying potential risks and outlining specific preventative measures.
• Annual Employee Training: Equip your team with knowledge on recognizing, addressing, and reporting signs of workplace violence, fostering a secure and informed work environment.
• Essential Record-Keeping: Document all instances of workplace violence and meticulously track the execution of your prevention strategy. Ensure training records are preserved as mandated.
Defining “Workplace Violence”: Understand that workplace violence encompasses any act or threat that may lead to physical harm, psychological distress, or undue stress, impacting not only employees but also clients, contractors, and guests.
Why This Matters: The ripple effects of workplace violence extend beyond the immediate victims, affecting your business and community. SB 553 aims to mitigate these risks by embedding a proactive safety and awareness culture within all sectors.
